Country House Cycle Tour

Country house cycle tour - Wheely Wonderful Cycling

A classic cycle tour, staying at country house hotels. You stay two nights at the Explorers House on the River Teme and two nights at The Castle Hotel in Bishops Castle. Easy cycle rides along the valleys of the Teme, Redlake & Clun. A relaxing way to explore the borders & special places like Bishops Castle, Montgomery, the Stiperstones and Hopton Castle.

Easy to moderate cycling. Our special route guides and maps offer lots of alternatives. Total 80 miles (min) - 117 miles (max). Opportunities for longer rides each day.

Day 1. Petchfield Farm to Milebrook. 14 miles (22 km). Cycle to Milebrook following the River Teme on an idyllic lane. Visit a roman village for lunch; stop for tea, books, and to admire the grand yew hedges of Brampton Bryan or just picnic by the river & we guarantee you will see kingfishers.

Day 2. Explore the River Teme and the Welsh borders. Choice of routes 12 - 34 miles (19 - 55 km). As you cycle upstream, the idyllic lanes lead you past ruined castles, ancient churches, Offa’s Dyke and remote inns. The routes take you to unspoilt border towns like Knighton, Presteigne or Llangunllo. The market town of Knighton has an excellent Offa’s Dyke Visitor Centre and you can even follow the picturesque Heart of Wales railway into the heart of the welsh hills. Or head for one of the great inns in the valley for a leisurely lunch.

Day 3. Milebrook to Bishops Castle. 22 miles (35km). Cycle via Clun, along one of our favourite routes, following the Rivers Teme and Redlake, gradually leading you up through the hills. Clun is a great place for lunch - either in one of the pubs - or picnic in the castle grounds. After lunch follow the River Unk, to the Kerry Ridgeway. Fabulous views across Wales to Cader Idris on the Welsh Coast. Then freewheel downhill into the border market town of Bishops Castle. Here you stay for two nights at The Castle Hotel, built in 1719 by Lord Carnavon on the site of the Bishop of Hereford’s original castle.

Day 4. Explore from Bishops Castle. Choice of routes 12 - 24 miles (19 - 39 km). Bishops Castle is home to many special festivals during the year- including the unique Tandem Triathlon. There are great cycle rides to the Georgian town of Montgomery, the atmospheric Stiperstones and exploring the River Onny.

Day 5. Bishops Castle to Petchfield Farm. 20 miles (32 km). An easy cycling day, pass by Clive of India’s former home with its grand Arboretum, Hopton Castle and a 1930s traditional tearoom. Lunch at a riverside inn, or a unique parlour pub – unchanged for a 100 years. Finishing any time in the afternoon, back at Petchfield Farm.
