Family Cycling Holiday (Shropshire)

Farmhouse cycling holiday - Wheely Wonderful Cycling

Cycle upstream along the River Teme on your first day. Stop at a Roman village for lunch, the riverside inn has a great garden. Next stop Brampton Bryan - with a coracle maker and a castle (the scene of a famous siege in the civil war – Lady Brilliana against the Parliamentarian army). Just before Bucknell is the great mound of Coxall knoll, site of King Caractacus’ last stand against the Romans. That’s in the first 10 miles before you get to Bucknell. Oh there’s also a teashop ... just in case you get hungry in the afternoon! Staying two nights in the border village of Bucknell.

Easy cycling following quiet country lanes (some even have grass in the middle), along the Teme and Clun valleys. Total 24 miles, plus a choice of easy day rides.

Day 1. Petchfield Farm to Bucknell. 10 - 12 miles (16 -19 km). A wonderful route along idyllic valley lanes past a string of picturesque villages. Plenty of inns & teashops, on your route, including one in the historic village of Brampton Bryan with its grand yew hedge & castle. Bucknell is a charming Shropshire village, with two country pubs that provide excellent food.

Day 2. Explore the Teme Valley and Clun. Choice of rides 10 - 25 miles. Cycle to Clun, with its packhorse bridge, museum and pretty gardens at the historic almshouses. Or choose a cycle ride to the tiny hamlet of Llanfairwaterdine, next to Offa’s Dyke. And if you want a rest from cycling, Bucknell has great walks from your doorstep.

Day 3. Bucknell to Petchfield Farm. 8 - 12 miles (12 -19 km). Cycle down the Teme valley & water meadows. Visit the ruined Hopton Castle and a 1930’s traditional tearoom. Or you can lunch in the roman village of Leintwardine with its riverside pub, & the unique Sun Inn Parlour pub – unchanged for a 100 years. Finishing any time in the afternoon, back at Petchfield Farm.
